Demystifying My Little Pony - 小马宝莉 (xiǎomǎ bǎo lì)

Updated: Oct 2, 2019

I spent quite a bit of time getting my head around the characters of My Little Pony whilst writing descriptions of the books on our website. So I have decided to compile a primer on the key characters of the My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic series (because the universe of My Little Pony and Friends is enormous!) with the corresponding names in Mandarin. The books are available on our website.

N.B.: Source - All pictures and information for this blog are taken from here.

My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic

Where:

  • Equestria 小马利亚 (xiǎo mǎlìyà)

  • Ponyville 小马镇 (xiǎomǎ zhèn)

Who:

The plot:

Princess Celestia sends her protégé Twilight Sparkle to a small town called Ponyville to learn about friendship. Twilight and her assistant Spike meets five other fellow ponies: Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie. Each of the ponies represent a different facet of friendship: Applejack – Honesty; Rarity – Generosity; Fluttershy – Kindness; Rainbow Dash - Loyalty, and Pinkie Pie – Cheerful and Playfulness. Together, the little ponies travel around Equestria helping others and at the same time working out problems that arise in their own friendships.

Princess Celestia 宇宙公主 (yǔzhòu gōngzhǔ)

Princess Celestia (宇宙 yǔzhòu means universe and 公主gōngzhǔ means princess), is the ruler of Equestria (she is actually the co-ruler alongside her younger sister Princess Luna, and the adoptive aunt of Princess Cadance, but let’s leave that out for now). She is the mentor of her "faithful student" Twilight Sparkle. She has a pet phoenix named Philomena.

Twilight Sparkle 紫悦 (zǐ yuè)

Twilight Sparkle (紫 zǐ means purple or violet and 悦 yuè means pleased), the central character, is sent by her mentor Princess Celestia, ruler of Equestria, to the town of Ponyville to learn about the magic of friendship. Twilight has to send regular reports back to Princess Celestia to explain what she has learned about friendship from her “adventures” with her new found friends.

Spike - 穗龙 (suìlóng)

Spike also known as Spike the Dragon (hence the word 龙 lóng which means dragon), is Twilight Sparkle's best friend and assistant. He handles all the communications between Twilight and Princess Celestia. He magically deliver the scrolls to and from Princess Celestia by burning Twilight's written messages with his fiery breath and then coughing up the scrolls when Princess Celestia sends a message back. Fun fact :) Spike has crush on Rarity 珍奇 (zhēnqí)

Applejack - 苹果嘉儿 (píngguǒ jiāér)

Applejack is a friendly pony that lives and works at Sweet Apple Acres with her grandmother and her older brother Big McIntosh. She loves the environment and represents the friendship element of honesty.

Rarity - 珍奇 (zhēnqí)

Rarity (珍 zhēn means precious or rare) is a fashion designer as well as a seamstress at her own shop in Ponyville, the Carousel Boutique. She has a younger sister called Sweetie Belle and represents the friendship element of generosity.

Fluttershy 柔柔 (róu róu)

Fluttershy is kind and gentle (柔róu means soft or gentle). She lives in a small cottage near the Everfree Forest and loves taking care of animals. She represents the friendship element of kindness.

Rainbow Dash 云宝 (yúnbǎo)

Rainbow Dash (云 yún means cloud and 宝 bǎo mean jewel or treasure) is a Pegasus pony and is the best flier in all of Equestria. She maintains the weather and clears the skies in Ponyville. She represents the friendship element of loyalty.

Pinkie Pie 碧琪 (bì qí)

Pinkie Pie loves eating sweets and is the cheerful baker at Sugarcube Corner. Pinkie makes everyone laugh and loves throwing parties for her friends. Rightly so, she represents the friendship element of laughter.
